H1N1 Influenza Information
                                                                                                                                December 2, 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As you know, a new virus, called the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus, was first identified in the United States in late April 2009. The virus has caused illness ranging from mild to severe, including hospitalizations and deaths in adults and children. Many children have been ill from the 2009 H1N1 infection and there have been large outbreaks in some schools across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended that children and young adults aged 6 months through 24 years be vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 as soon as the vaccine is available.
Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially serious disease. The Swansea Board of Health and Swansea Town Nurse are working with your child’s school to give the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to our students.
The High School and Junior High School children will be able to get the vaccine during the school day. We are also planning to hold out of school clinics for elementary-aged children as vaccine becomes available through the board of health (parents will need to bring their child to these clinics).

The Town Nurse will hold a vaccination clinic for students in the High School on Monday, December 14th and at the Junior High School on Monday December 21st, during school hours.
  • Consent Forms must be returned to the High School by December 9th and to the Junior High School by December 16th.

Clinics will be scheduled as vaccine becomes available. There will be no cost to you for this vaccine. We currently have limited numbers of vaccine doses. The vaccine will be allocated to your child on a first come first serve basis as consent forms are returned.

The vaccine consent form includes options allowing you to either accept or refuse the vaccination for your child. If you refuse, the vaccination will not be given to your child. When your child receives the vaccine, a form indicating the vaccine was given will be handed to your child. Keep this form for your records.
·         Please be aware, we have a limited amount of supply and may not be able to give everyone that returns a form a shot during the first clinic.

You must return a consent form in order for your child to be vaccinated in school.

Please realize this is a one time event due to severity of the H1N1 illness and in the future immunizations will not be available in school.

If you have any questions about the vaccine or the vaccination clinics, please call: Leslie Stolts RN,C at  508-679-4049 from 8:45 AM to 3:00 PM.

Sincerely,
Leslie Stolts RN,C    Director of Health Services
Confirmed Influenza Cases
November 4, 2009

As of 11/4/09 we have 3-5 confirmed cases of "influenza" or "flu-like illnesses" that have been documented by physicians and received by the nurses. We have nothing confirming any actual H1N1 diagnosis.

Health Information UPDATE

Dear Parents,
We understand your concern for your child's wellbeing surrounding the H1N1 influenza virus currently circulating in Massachusetts.

We are beginning to see more students with flu-like illnesses in all the Swansea Schools. At this point in the season, we can assume that the "flu-like activity" is H1N1 related because currently there is no seasonal flu circulating according to the Centers for Disease Control.  I have been in contact with the Swansea Board of Health and the Swansea Town Nurse. When information is made available to us regarding vaccine availability and the scheduling of clinics I will be posting it on the district website.

  • Please be sure to keep your child home if they have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher with one or more flu-like symptoms (i.e. sore throat and/or cough).
  • If your child becomes sick in school with a fever of 100 degrees or higher your child will be sent home.
  • Students may return to school only after they have been fever free (without the use of fever reducing medicine, such as Tylenol or Motrin) for 24 hours.
  • Be sure to use good hand washing and cough etiquette (coughing into your arm) at home, school and work.

I would like to clarify some concerns:

  • Rhode Island has mandated that all school?aged children will be able to receive their H1N1 Vaccine in the schools if the parents choose.
  • Massachusetts has not mandated any in school immunizations.
  • Parents should continue to watch the news and be watching for clinics at their pediatrician?s offices and elsewhere in the community.
